Home Improvements, specifically for the DIY Homeowners
Permits are required for almost everything, so it is a good idea to always check to see if one is necessary for any upcoming project. Below are examples of the most common Homeowner projects however yours may not be listed.
Permits are required for all Decks regardless of height or size, Basement Finishes, Additions, Remodels, Radon, Water Heater/Furnace/AC replacement or new, Kitchen/Bathroom Remodels, Window/ Door/Siding replacements, Swimming Pools, Hot Tubs, Retaining or Block Walls over 48 inches and Fences over 6 feet in height. If you do not see your specific project listed please contact the Building Division for further discussion.
Plan submittal is required for most projects however some may be exempt, please contact us if you are unsure. Inspections are automatically assigned when applying for the permit. Since each project is different please contact us with any questions. Please see Forms and Regulations for the most requested Handout Guidelines and the Homeowner Fee Estimator for a rough idea of what the total permit fee would be for your project.

EZ Permits
As a homeowner, are you having trouble getting started with your Do-It-Yourself Project (decks, basements, covers, etc…)? Give the Building Division a call to set up meeting to help you work through the permitting system and get you started on the right path. The possibility of walking out the door with your permit in hand is the goal of our new program, EZ Permits.
Meetings with the Building Division staff are available by appointment only and will be scheduled every Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to noon for 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the scope of work. We will email or fax you a short form to fill out prior to the meeting that will allow us time to gather additional information for your specific project. To schedule an appointment, email us or call 303.841.1970.
Homeowner Building Classes
