A long-planned, important link in the Town of Parker's regional roadway network is nearing reality.
Dransfeldt Road, which currently terminates at Twenty Mile Road, will soon be extended south to intersect with Motsenbocker Road, just north of Salisbury Park. This project has been planned for 20-plus years and will include a new bridge spanning Cherry Creek that will be the longest such bridge the Town of Parker has ever constructed.
Project work has begun in Summer 2023 with channel improvements to Cherry Creek (see description below). The roadway portion of the project is expected to be competitively bid in the fourth quarter of 2023 with construction expected to commence in the first quarter of 2024 and continue until 2025. Planned and anticipated funding sources for this project include the Town, Mile High Flood Control District, Federal and Douglas County. Douglas County funding was solidified via an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) that was approved in September 2023.
Cherry Creek at Dransfeldt Road Stream Restoration Project
The Town of Parker, Mile High Flood District and Cherry Creek Basin Water Quality Authority have partnered previously to design and construct several major drainage projects within the Cherry Creek corridor. This reach of Cherry Creek adjacent to Dransfeldt Road and Flat Acres Farms has been identified as unstable with various locations of bank and bed erosion. This erosion leads to unstable vertical banks, a reduction in riparian habitat and movement of sediment to the Cherry Creek reservoir. Additionally, portions of the active stream, regional trail and nearby sanitary sewer will be realigned to accommodate a future bridge crossing of Dransfeldt Road over Cherry Creek. This project will stabilize the reach using a holistic approach to stream restoration:
- The reclaimed stream will be reshaped to eliminate the steep banks and provide a better connection of the surrounding native vegetation to groundwater.
- The stream will be armored with rock protection and select vegetation to provide improved stability, water quality and habitat.
- A sculpted concrete pedestrian trail crossing, mimicking natural rock formations, will be incorporated into the stream stabilization measures.
- Portions of the active stream, regional trail and a sanitary sewer will be realigned to ensure adequate flood conveyance under the future bridge.
This project is currently under design and permitting with construction anticipated to begin in April 2023 and continue into the summer. The Cherry Creek Trail will remain open during the entirety of construction. Once complete, the project will be monitored for revegetation and wetland planting success criteria.
